Health Insurance Portability And Accountability Act

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is a federal law that provides data privacy and security provisions for safeguarding medical information. HIPAA compliance is mandatory for covered entities, including healthcare providers, health plans, and healthcare clearinghouses, as well as their business associates. The act consists of two main components: the Privacy Rule and the Security Rule. The Privacy Rule establishes national standards for the protection of individuals' medical records and other personal health information, including how it can be used and disclosed. The Security Rule sets national standards for protecting the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of electronic protected health information (ePHI) by requiring covered entities to implement administrative, physical, and technical safeguards. HIPAA violations can result in significant penalties, including fines and legal action.
