Privacy Rule

Privacy Rule is a regulation under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) that establishes national standards for the protection of certain health information. The Privacy Rule applies to health plans, healthcare clearinghouses, and healthcare providers who transmit health information in electronic form. The Privacy Rule sets limits on the use and disclosure of protected health information (PHI) and gives patients rights over their PHI. It requires covered entities to implement administrative, physical, and technical safeguards to protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of PHI. The Privacy Rule also requires covered entities to train their workforce on the policies and procedures related to PHI and to designate a privacy officer to be responsible for the development and implementation of the entity's privacy policies and procedures.
