Aliasing
Aliasing is a phenomenon that occurs when a signal is sampled at a rate that is too low to accurately represent the original signal. This results in a distorted representation of the signal, where high-frequency components are misrepresented as lower frequency components. In data science, aliasing can occur when data is sampled at a rate that is too low to capture the underlying patterns in the data. This can lead to inaccurate analysis and conclusions. Aliasing can be mitigated by increasing the sampling rate or by applying a low-pass filter to remove high-frequency components before sampling. In machine learning, aliasing can occur when the model is too simple to capture the complexity of the underlying data, resulting in underfitting. This can be addressed by increasing the complexity of the model or by using more advanced techniques such as deep learning.
