Processing Units
Processing Units refer to the physical components of a computer system that are responsible for executing instructions and performing calculations. In the context of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, processing units are critical for performing complex computations required for tasks such as machine learning, deep learning, and data analysis. The two main types of processing units used in these fields are Central Processing Units (CPUs) and Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). CPUs are responsible for executing instructions and managing the flow of data within a computer system, while GPUs are designed to perform complex mathematical calculations in parallel. GPUs are particularly well-suited for tasks such as training deep neural networks, which require large amounts of matrix multiplication. In recent years, specialized processing units such as Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) have also been developed specifically for machine learning tasks, offering even greater performance and efficiency.
