Parity Bits

In data communication, a parity bit is an error-detecting code added to a block of data to ensure that the total number of 1's in the data is even or odd. The parity bit is set to 1 if the number of 1's in the data is odd, and it is set to 0 if the number of 1's in the data is even. When the data is received, the receiver counts the number of 1's in the data and compares it to the parity bit. If the number of 1's is not the same as the parity bit, an error is detected. Parity bits are commonly used in serial communication and storage systems to detect errors caused by noise or other transmission errors.
