Network Time Protocol

Network Time Protocol (NTP) is a protocol used to synchronize the clocks of computers and other devices on a network. It is designed to compensate for variable network delays, and can usually maintain time to within tens of milliseconds over the public Internet. NTP uses a hierarchical system of time sources, with primary servers at the root level that are directly connected to reliable time sources such as atomic clocks or GPS receivers. Secondary servers synchronize with primary servers, and so on down the hierarchy. NTP can also be used to distribute time information within a local network, allowing all devices to have a consistent time reference.
