Histone Proteins
Histone proteins are a group of basic proteins found in the nucleus of eukaryotic cells that package and organize DNA into structural units called nucleosomes. These proteins play a crucial role in gene regulation, DNA replication, and repair. There are five major types of histones: H1, H2A, H2B, H3, and H4. Each histone protein has a unique structure and function. The histone code hypothesis suggests that specific modifications to histone proteins, such as acetylation, methylation, and phosphorylation, can alter the structure of chromatin and affect gene expression. Histone proteins are important targets for epigenetic therapies, which aim to modify gene expression without altering the DNA sequence.
