Variable-length Coding

Variable-length coding is a data compression technique that assigns shorter codes to more frequently occurring symbols and longer codes to less frequently occurring symbols. This technique is used to reduce the amount of data required to represent a message or signal, by taking advantage of the statistical properties of the data. Variable-length coding is widely used in data compression algorithms such as Huffman coding, arithmetic coding, and Lempel-Ziv-Welch (LZW) coding. In these algorithms, the variable-length codes are generated based on the frequency of occurrence of each symbol in the data. The codes are then used to represent the symbols in the compressed data, resulting in a more efficient representation of the original data.
